Are there any examples of societies that had common land that oppressed women's rights and liberties?

Historian Howard Zinn states that in societies that had a common land or in otherwise all land was owned by the community, women had more rights and liberties than in colonial America. Are there any examples of societies that did not have private property that treated women badly, or any examples of societies in the same time period that gave women as much or more rights than these commonwealth societies?
