How much a role have mosques and mullahs played ?

in spreading rhetoric which have ignited ordinary people into becoming so called "extremists" ...and these people inarguably have been using such teachings as a basis for violent acts against ..both non-muslims and muslims(probably as collateral damage or kuffars ...ex : Sufis getting treatment by Taliban) ...what do you think ?
