What should I have done in this situation?

You could have stopped with them, which would have meant bumping into them, but since they stopped suddenly that wouldn't have been your fault. You could have done that wave people do that's the universal "sorry" sign. I'm sure they've completely forgotten all about it by now, though, so don't beat yourself up about it.
